Tropic dial & Ghost bezel Abercrombie and Fitch Heuer Seafarer 2446

this watch is no longer available for sale

Mid 1960’s Abercrombie and Fitch Seafarer chronograph with Valjoux 72 movement. 40mm (without crown and pushers) all stainless steel snapback case. This watch has the extra tide measurement function. These watches were made by Heuer for A&F and Orvis to be sold in their sporting goods stores. Stainless steel bezel with aluminum insert. Original colorful dial and hands are in good condition with discolorization throughout the dial , causing a wonderful patinated ‘Tropic’ fading. The button at the 9 o’clock position sets the tide marker, which is then driven by the movement. The stainless steel bezel has some slight wear around its edges from regular use.  Bezel insert turned ‘Ghost’. Serviced March 2016 @ Chronodeco in Oregon so runs well and all chronograph functions work correctly.

Description

CASE & BACK: This watch measures a large 40mm not including crown and is 12.5mm to the top of the flush fit crystal. The Stainless Steel case appears to have been lightly polished but still shows its original bevels and polished finish. There are very few superficial scratches and some nicks commensurate with a very lightly worn watch  — Fantastic vintage condition overall. The steel back has some very light and superficial scratches but shows its original Heuer Autavia nomenclature of the period is also in Excellent original cosmetic condition. The inner caseback shows no corrosion . Case has reference ‘2446’ and serial number 111098

DIAL & HANDS: Beautifully faded and patinated ‘Tropic’ dial with a few light scratches  All original polished steel and ‘cream’ colored Tritium luminous numbers.

CROWN & PUSHERS: Signed Heuer crown looks very clean and winds and pulls out to the time-setting position as it should. It sits tightly against the case. The two pusher caps are likewise in Excellent shape and both chrono pushers work as they should and also nice and crisply. Tide setting works as it should

CRYSTAL: Large flush-fit acrylic crystal is Excellent+ without scratches and no deep marks and sits barely proud of the bezel, which I believe to be correct for this model.

MOVEMENT: Legendary Manual wind, Valjoux 72 chronograph is looking bright and working well with all correct Heuer nomenclature of the era and shock protection. Watch is keeping good time with a strong power reserve and all chronograph functions are working properly and returning to zero. This is guaranteed to be the case at the time of shipment.

SERVICE HISTORY: This watch was fully serviced in March ’16
